Energy efficient windows make for an energy efficient home

The temperatures won't slow us down in replacing windows in Maine

Winters are cold in Maine, so it’s important to be sure that the windows in your home are energy efficient. There are many benefits to energy efficient windows, from saving money, improving our effect on the environment, and keeping our homes as comfortable as can be. But what ARE energy efficient windows?

Lawrence Berkeley National Library defines the term “Energy Efficiency” as “using less energy to provide the same service.” (And actually uses a homeowner replacing their old windows with new windows as their first example!) Energy efficiency is basically utilizing the energy you already have in the most efficient way possible.

There are three major components when considering energy efficient windows:

  1. Frames. Composite frames like Fibrex are the best kind (as opposed to wood or vinyl) because they are extremely durable, don’t conduct heat, and they stand the test of time- no warping or rotting that would let cold air in.
  2. Glass: Low-E glass has a microscopic coating, or several coatings, that reflects long-wave infrared energy. When heat inside a home tries to escape during the colder seasons, Low-E glass reflects the heat back into the home, so review what types of Low-E coatings each company is offering.
  3. Proper Installation. The best windows in the world can be of no use if they aren’t installed properly. Sealant and insulation need to be administered professionally to be sure that your windows are 100% sealed. A warranty should cover both product and installation, giving you, the customer, peace of mind.

Low-E glass in windows

When all of these factors for your windows are met, your home will truly be more energy efficient, and you can reap the benefits of conserving energy. Consumer advice expert Clark Howard’s website www.Clark.com lists replacing your windows as one of the top 5 ways to make your old house as energy efficient as a new one, touting, “Replacing single pane windows with ENERGY STAR-qualified windows can save $126-$465 per year in energy costs, according to the Department of Energy. Those in New England will get the biggest benefit while those in California save the least.” And here in Maine, it's safe to say we fall into the category of colder New England climates, therefore maximizing the highest amount of energy savings by replacing old windows!

Renewal by Andersen windows are not only ENERGY STAR-qualified but they also have other unique benefits as well, which include blocking harmful UV rays which can fade furniture and blinds, in addition to sound-deadening qualities.

Where is being comfortable most important than in your own home? Keeping your home energy efficient will allow you to keep your home and the temperature you really want without that lingering worry of how much money you're wasting. With exponential monetary savings, an improved impact on the environment, and a healthier and more comfortable home, energy efficient windows are the best possible improvement you can make to your home in Maine this winter.

Glass in replacement windows should be the most important factor

90% of a replacement window is glass. Shouldn't that be the most important factor when considering replacement windows?

When you are considering getting your windows replaced, you want a good window that is installed properly (of course). However, if you've thought about the components of a window, 90% of a replacement window is glass. This is a very important factor, especially for folks who live in southern Maine in the winter, when trying to keep your home comfortable in all seasons without paying more for inefficient windows.

This video explains the science behind the technology of Andersen's Low-E4 glass which is manufactured with every Renewal by Andersen window. And the good news is, Low-E4 glass comes standard in every Renewal by Andersen replacement window.

For those who would like to read the highlights, here are the features and benefits of Low-E4 glass:

  1. Renewal by Andersen windows have 11 coatings to enhance the efficiency of the whole window performance and help fight against home energy loss.
  2. There is a microscopic coating on the exterior of the window glass called Titanium-Dioxide. When activated by sunlight, this coating makes the exterior of the glass smoother which allows water to shed cleaner and evaporate quicker without leaving as many dirt spots. Renewal by Andersen customers find find themselves spending more time at the beach and less time cleaning their windows.
  3. The space in-between the panes of glass is filled with an Argon-Nitrogen blend. Because Argon by itself is known to dissipate through your glass over time, the Nitrogen blend keeps the Argon stable and your windows warmer than any other replacement window made in America.
  4. Do you live on a busy street, or near an airport, or by some train tracks? Renewal by Andersen windows reduces the intrusion of sound into your home, allowing you to entertain, or read a book without noisy outside interruptions.
  5. Andersen carries a 20-year warranty on the replacement window glass giving you piece of mind and one number to call should you have any questions.

Andersen Window GlassIf that wasn't great enough, Renewal by Andersen has also developed an optional upgrade to our glass packages called "Smart Sun". No, our windows can't control the sun, but rather control the amount of harmful rays entering  your home from the sun during different times of the year in Maine. Meaning, our window replacements with Smart Sun glass are 45% more efficient in winter and 70% more efficient in summer (see our Beauty Catalog for details) plus they protect your furnishings and flooring from UV rays.

Who says replacing your windows isn’t a good investment?

Cost vs. Value 2016

Hanley Wood is a real estate media firm focused on commercial and residential construction in North America. Every year Hanley Wood produces a report showing consumers what they can expect investing into remodeling their homes. The 2016 report was recently released and shows that replacement windows are one of the highest returns for your investment.cvv-logo

The study is very thorough and broke down statistics not only nationally but directly to the City of Portland’s surrounding areas. Replacing your windows is ranked as one of the best returns of 83.3% costs recouped. This outperformed a bathroom remodel (60.6%) and a kitchen remodel (56.6%). Unless, of course, you are referring to the windows in the bathroom or kitchen.

However, cost versus value isn’t the only research statistics to consider when looking at replacing windows. What about looking at expense versus investment when considering replacement windows?  A good chunk of energy can be lost through your walls, ceiling, basement and even your old and drafty windows. In the winter, the warm air in your home will escape through inefficient windows. In the summer, with the expansion and contraction of inferior window materials like vinyl, the outside warm air will find its way into your comfortably cooler home. Renewal by Andersen, wood-composite replacement windows are 45% more energy efficient in winter and 70% more efficient in summer.* The high performance Low-E4 glass used in our windows will not only make your home more energy efficient year round, but also reduce outside noise.

Energy efficiency is not the only benefit of replacing windows; it can also impact the resale value of your home especially in older and historic homes. Buyers are less likely to be interested in older homes that have single pane glass windows for fear of high energy loss and costs. When replacing windows in older homes it is very important to choose windows that match the home’s historical aesthetics. After careful consideration and review of the technical specifications, Renewal by Andersen replacement windows have been approved by the Portland Historical Preservation Committee. If they've approved our windows, shouldn't you?

Can you see where this home could receive 83% ROI?

Whether you are looking to improve the energy efficiency of your home or making improvements to sell your home faster, Hanley Wood reports that upscale window replacement is one of the best ways to invest in your home. Replace windows before harsh winter

Above normal snowfall is expected so replace windows before winter

Each year, we all endure a time in southern Maine where the temperatures begin to drop and many Mainers look for ways where they can save on their energy bills. In fact, Efficiency Maine has some rebate programs that you should look into when you replace windows before winter. The reason I write this blog today in 90 degree heat is because the forecast for another snowy and cold winter is expected (which is only 4 months away).

USA above average snowfall 2015-2016

The above map gives you a sense that we will have "Well above normal snowfall" in our region this coming winter. We can help you plan to winterize your home this year before the snow flies and make Jack Frost weep from not finding his way into your home ever again.

The first step is always a misconception. We provide a free service to visit your home and inspect your old windows to determine how you want your new windows to look. From there, we can build a project quote based on you and your home's needs. This does not mean you need to purchase anything at the time of our visit. This is an information gathering session to give you an exact price quote should you decide to go ahead with replacing your windows (and learn about the specials). The only thing you have to lose is more heat out of your old windows.

Size of replacement windows matter

The size of your windows can mean everything to a southern Maine homeowner

This is an important topic to discuss when contemplating replacing your windows. Many people (and even some who are in the trades) think replacement windows are no good because you will lose glass and viewing area. I remember last summer talking with one of my friends who is a plumber (but has done other handyman type of work) saying how he's going to keep his old windows because replacement windows never work. I thought to myself, he's "almost right" because some replacement windows won't work.

Vinyl window measurement

Every window replaced with an insert window will lose some glass area

If anyone tells you different, don't believe them! When you remove the wood window sashes and insert a new window inside the existing window's masterframe, this is considered an insert window installation versus a full-frame replacement window (see my blog on "different replacement window installation applications"). Physically, when you insert another window inside an existing window masterframe, you will be losing overall glass area and hence losing viewing area. However, Renewal by Andersen insert replacement windows lose the least amount of glass area than any other vinyl replacement window in the United States. This is due to the fact that Renewal by Andersen windows are twice as strong as vinyl windows and can be manufactured with a sleek design while holding it's structural integrity.

Renewal by Andersen windows can be made larger than vinyl windows with the help of Fibrex

fibrex is stronger emblem 2

Renewal by Andersen windows are made out of a composite material called Fibrex.

Learn more about Fibrex by viewing this 2-minute video

The combination of wood fibers and polymers create the best of both worlds. We can make a larger window and you can keep your home's beautiful wood aesthetics because Renewal by Andersen windows are strong like wood and look like wood, but you'll never have to worry about maintenance. In addition, Fibrex is warrantied to help keep the structural integrity of the window intact for decades. This also allows us to fuse different color combinations, create dual color windows and even a black exterior. Can you imaging what would happen to a vinyl window if it were painted black?

**WARNING**
Do NOT paint your vinyl windows black and see what happens.
This is not a suggestion.

If you want to see how Renewal by Andersen windows compare to other material types, please call us at 207-985-8465 or fill out our contact form to schedule a free, in-home consultation. Growing ‘panes’ to replace more windows

Recruiting and training the right people to replace windows and keep up with demand

If you can believe it, Renewal by Andersen grew even through the toughest times of the recent recession. Now that we're hearing our economy is trying to stabilize, more people are investing into their homes. We are now experiencing some "growing panes" to interview, recruit and train professional individuals to handle installing Renewal by Andersen windows for southern Maine homeowners.

To learn more about this opportunity, click the link below (this will be active through 7/22/15 or until we find the right installers, which ever comes sooner):

JobsinME.com - Renewal by Andersen Window Installers

However, this is a different type of window installation because of the high caliber product line and craftsmanship that goes into a perfect installation. Unlike other companies who install vinyl windows, our installers need to be versed on intricate carpentry situations. Even installations that involve something as simple as removing rotting jambs, sills, stools, headers, casing and stops are a rarity in the window replacement world for Maine.

Andersen prepares for high demand of window installs

The Renewal by Andersen corporate headquarters in Cottage Grove, MN will be expanding their factory to accommodate the significant growth planned for 2015 and beyond.

"We've grown to a point where we needed to add a third shift and are making windows 24/5." Said President of Renewal by Andersen Corporation, Paul Delahunt.

To join our happy list of customers, give us a call at 207-985-8465. We'll schedule a time to visit with you in the comfort of your home to discuss your planned window replacement project and provide you with a written project quote.

Why choosing vinyl windows is a mistake

Vinyl windows used to be thought of as "final"

Of course you would think I'm bias by writing about how choosing vinyl replacement windows for your home is a mistake especially since we don't offer vinyl windows. However, don't take my word for it. The Andersen Corporation has been in business since 1903 and was one of the first creators of vinyl windows back in 1959. They no longer manufacture vinyl windows because this type of product doesn't provide a long-term value to homeowners.

"But doesn't the old adage that 'vinyl is final' still hold true?"

If this was the case, our business of replacing windows with Renewal by Andersen windows would be down by 25%.

Here are some apparent problems with choosing vinyl windows:

seal failureProblem #1: Seal Failure - Vinyl windows expand and contract. That's why when you hang vinyl siding on a house you don't nail it solid to the house wall and allow it to expand and contract with the difference in temperatures. This movement causes exterior window caulking to give way and even the seals between the panes of glass to break down. Since we live in one of the harshest climates in the country, southern Maine homeowners need windows that are going to withstand what Mother Nature throws at their home in every season for years on end.

Problem #2: Warping - Summer will eventually return to us in Maine and with that comes some significantly high temperatures. Some of these temperatures are enough to melt plastic. So why not vinyl windows? Here's a picture of a vinyl window that has melted due to the high summer heat.Warped-Vinyl-Window

Problem #3: Vinyl window installers are not skilled carpenters - Here is a common situation. An unassuming homeowner has an old window that needs to be replaced. They hire (what they thought) were skilled installers to replace their old window with a new vinyl window. The installers remove the old window and find rotting issues. In many cases, the vinyl window installer will set the new window into the opening WITHOUT REMOVING THE ROT! The photo below clearly shows the rotted frame around the windows. No amount of caulking or aluminum wrap will be able to fix the potentially dangerous problems to arise out of this installation.

New windows in rotted frame Problem #4: Loss of glass area - When you replace your windows with a vinyl product, you will lose viewing area. The reason being if you are inserting a window inside the existing window frame, you are going to lose glass area. Vinyl windows lose the most glass area of any replacement window produced on the market today. WDW - Vinyl glass lossWith Renewal by Andersen windows, there are a couple of installation methods and in some cases, you can gain glass area.

Spring home improvement list

Let us shorten your spring "honey-do" list!

To do list replace windows

While we are still hibernating from one of the most brutally cold and snowy Maine winters on record (I guess Punxsutawney Phil was spot-on this year), it's a great time to reflect on the projects you want to start this spring. Even though gardening might be put off further in the season until the severe frost is completely gone, we can install windows year-round.

"I need help visualizing what my windows will look like when I have Renewal by Andersen replace my windows."

With our Window Visualizer, you can upload a photo of your home and review different design ideas from styles, finishes, colors, glass and even screen types. Renewal by Andersen reviews

I preface this blog by reminding everyone that you need to think of Andersen Windows Corporation as two different divisions. First, we all know Andersen as one of the largest manufactures of new construction windows. If you're building new or adding on a new addition to your existing home, you can find Andersen windows at your local box store. Second, Renewal by Andersen windows was born as their replacement window division of the corporation. They hire local, specialized companies to market, sell, install and service the Renewal by Andersen line of replacement windows. We are the local Renewal by Andersen company replacing windows in southern Maine.

To learn more about our process, I have included a testimonial from the Renewal by Andersen company from St. Louis, MO. Yes, you can see our local reviews by clicking here, but this customer reflects on the product that Andersen delivers, as well as the experience from the initial appointment consultation through installation of their Renewal by Andersen windows. You can experience the same feelings when you call us at 207-985-8465 or fill out the form to the right and get started to have us replace your windows.

Renewal by Andersen raving fan

RbA of St. Louis, MO

Overall, we are extremely satisfied with Renewal by Andersen. We had an atrium door replaced in the basement that was not working properly due settling of the house. We have already recommended Renewal by Andersen to friends and neighbors.

The sales representative is very knowledgeable and was able to answer our questions to our satisfaction. We did not feel pressured to buy. He told us that the installation would be scheduled in about six to eight weeks, but we could delay installation if there was a scheduling problem or if the weather did not permit a good installation of the door.

About a week later, another Anderson representative came to our house to measure the opening in order to ensure that the right sized door was ordered and to verify what we ordered. He also took pictures to help the installers know what problems they may encounter. In addition, he told us what to expect during installation and how much clearance the crew needed.

About two to three weeks after the visit from the sales representative, we received a call from an Andersen representative to schedule the installation. The day before the installation, they called to remind us when the installation crew would arrive. The morning of the installation, they crew called to tell us when they would arrive.

We are very satisfied with the installation of the sliding patio door. The installation crew showed up earlier than they promised. The crew arrived at the house completely prepared to do their job. They were very focused on the task of removing the atrium door and installing the new sliding door. They quickly removed the old atrium door efficiently and with a minimum of effort. I was surprised they were able to remove the door in less than 20 minutes. They politely answered questions as they were working. We are very satisfied with the cleanliness of the crew. As they worked at removing the door and preparing the opening for the new door, they also kept the area clean. Although we cleaned the area before their arrival, the area was actually cleaner after they left then when they arrived. The crew likewise installed the new sliding patio door efficiently and quickly. I was also amazed at their smooth and efficient application of caulk to edges requiring sealing. The installation was remarkably quiet. They were able to remove the old door and install the new door in less than three hours.

After the crew completed installing the door, one of the installers explained and demonstrated how to use the door. He also told us that we needed to keep the door locked for 72 hours to ensure that the caulking set properly.

We are very satisfied with the sliding patio door. It functions well. It feels solid and slides open and closed easily. The door locks and unlocks with ease. The door is very attractive.

We are very satisfied with the communication we received throughout the project. All of the people from Anderson were friendly and professional. This includes the sales person, the person who measured, the people who contacted us on the phone and the installation crew.

My parents installed Andersen products in their porch 40 years ago. This includes a sliding door and multiple crank-out windows. The windows and doors continue to work flawlessly after all these years. As a result I have extremely high expectations regarding the quality and performance of Anderson products. We’ve only had the sliding patio door for around a month, so we have not had enough time to evaluate the performance of the product. So far we are very satisfied and we are confident that the product will continue to provide excellent performance. If we encounter any problem we are likewise confident that Renewal by Andersen will stand behind their product and make any necessary adjustments.
